A single phase open type variable auto transformer is a versatile electrical device that is used to control voltage levels in various applications. It is a type of auto transformer which has a single winding with a common portion acting as both the primary and secondary winding.
A single phase open type variable auto transformer works on the principle of self induction. It consists of a laminated core with a winding wrapped around it. The winding has a fixed tap at one end and a sliding contact known as a brush, that can be moved along the surface of winding. When an alternating current is applied to the primary winding, an induced voltage is generated in the secondary winding which is connected to the load.
The position of the brush determines the output voltage of the auto transformer. By sliding the brush closer to the fixed tap, the effective tuns ratio between the primary and secondary winding changes, resulting in a lower output voltage. Conversely, moving the brush away from the fixed tap increases the output voltage. This variable voltage control is achieved by utilizing the principle of self induction and the ability to tap into different points along the winding.
The open type design of these transformers refer to the absence of a protective enclosure, allowing for easy access to the winding and brush. This design choice offers flexibility and convenience in adjusting the output voltage.
